A genus of around 55 species of tendril-climbing plants from Africa, India, Southeast Asia and Australia. It contains many widely cultivated foods such as cucumber, cantaloupe and honeydew melons and the West Indian gherkin and these are now grown and consumed all over the world agriculturally or in greenhouses.
