Skullcap Overview

Scutellaria is a genus of several 100 species with a wide distribution in most temperate regions of the world. They are flowering plants in the mint family, known commonly as skullcap. The genus is represented by annuals, perennials, subshrubs and a few aquatic species. They produce oppositely arranged foliage and yellow, purple, white or blue 2-lipped blooms. They are traditionally used as medicinal plants and are cultivated in gardens for their upright sprays of hooded, tubular flowers.
