Pincushion Cactus Overview
Mammillaria is a genus containing around 162 species of spiny, perennial cacti in the Cactaceae family. They are native to Central America and the Caribbean, with a centre of diversity in Mexico. These plants have clusters of nobbly spherical or columnar stems topped by rings of funnel-shaped flowers. There are a variety of diverse forms, including interested crested plants, making them popular among cactus collectors. These plants grow best in full sun and very well-draining soil, add sand, grit or perlite to improve soil drainage. Water sparingly and infrequently as like most succulent plants, it can cope long periods without water. Overwatering is more detrimental, particularly when growing indoors as a houseplant and may lead to root rot.
