Fan Palm Overview

Sabal is a genus containing around 16 evergreen, single-stemmed palm species which have showy foliage and are also grown for their overall appearance. Originating from the West Indies and the Americas, this genus is characterised by its deeply divided, fan-shaped leaves and these plants are commonly known as Fan Palms or Palmettos. The leaf bases are often retained on the trunk, forming bundles below the tree crown. They produce small, white 3-petalled flowers from in between the leaves. These palms are considered hardy, they can cope with temperatures as low as -12 degrees Celsius, so are a popular choice for temperate garden planting. Light is one of the most important considerations for this genus, they can cope with freezing temperatures but often struggle from a lack of summer heat and light in temperate regions.
