Silver Sword Philodendron Overview

Philodendron hastatum is commonly known by the name Silver Sword Philodendron after its shiny, silvery leaf appearance. Foliage is almost metallic, slender-pointed, heart to arrow-shaped, coloured grey-green to grey-blue and the leaves possess elongated leaf blades. Emerging leaves are protected by modified leaf structures termed cataphylls and leaf shape changes with age, they typically start off heart-shaped and develop a more arrow-shaped appearance with age. Leaves measure between 45-60cm. This species likes to climb, it can reach up to 3m in height given the correct growing conditions. Provide with a moss pole or alternative structure to climb for the best results. Mature plants can produce red-green flowers arranged in spathe structures. Philodendron hastatum is tender and should be positioned in partial to shaded light, in well-draining, moist, soil high in organic matter for optimal growth. Originating from South-eastern Brazil, this tropical plant is a commonly grown houseplant in many areas, including the UK.
