There are more than 250 species in this genus of bushy, spiny deciduous or evergreen shrubs and trees. Native to warm temperate and subtropical regions around the world, they are cultivated for their aromatic bark and leaves, and are widely used in Asia in cooking and for medicinal purposes. Several species are also commonly grown as Bonsai specimens.
