Small genus of conifers originating from Eastern Asia and North America, usually columnar in shape. On plants less than a year old, leaves are needle-like, later developing into sprays that are flat and overlapping in adult trees. Male and female cones are produced and the leaves and bark are aromatic. This slow-growing genus has been widely cultivated as ornamental trees and for extensive landscaping use - hundreds of cultivar varieties have been bred for various traits including variegated/gold/bronze foliage, dwarf size, hedging and for its retention of the young needle-like leaves. Popular in rock gardens and for Bonsai.
