Eagles claw Overview
Echinocactus is a genus containing around 6 species of slow-growing perennial cacti. These are thick and stocky, barrel-shaped cacti with large spines, originating from Mexico and Southwest USA. Ribs are prominent and heavily-spined. On mature plants, small bell-shaped flowers open at night in summer. Their colours include red, pink, yellow and magenta. Species in this genus are best grown in a desert garden or in a warm greenhouse. They don't need much water and can go long periods of drought. Be careful of overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
