Genus commonly called black snakeroot or sanicle, contains roughly 44 perennial species, half of which are found in North America. They have palmately divided foliage with 3-5 wedge-shaped lobed which are toothed along the margin. Flowers are pink or green-white and produced in tight clusters on branching stems.
