Giant Elephant Ear Overview
Colocasia gigantea is also known by the names Giant Elephant Ear and Indian Taro after its huge stature. It is capable of growing over 3 m in height. It is a tuberous, evergreen perennial that has long-stalked, arrow to heart-shaped leaves which typically grow over 1m long. It is often found growing along river banks and has a dormant period during the dry season in places like South Africa. You may identify species from this genus by their large leaves which point downwards. In comparison, the related genus Alocasia features plants which have their leaves pointing upwards. This species grows best in full sunlight to partially shaded conditions and thrives in a humid environment and moist to wet soil.
