Houseleeks Overview

Sempervivum is a genus of around 33 hardy, evergreen, succulent perennials, also known as Semps, Houseleeks and Liveforever. They produce short stolons which grow on the soil surface and alongside highly symmetrical rosettes of thick, fleshy foliage which is pointed and oval to strap-shaped. Dramatic, tall, star-shaped blooms with 8-16 petals are produced from rosettes and these are usually white, pink-purple, red or yellow. Outdoors, Sempervivum species tend to grow across the ground in mats, and some species have white hairs. Originating from the mountains of Europe and Asia, this genus is native to rocky areas. They grow best in dry, gritty soil and many species and hybrid cultivars are popular garden and houseplants.
