This genus has over 20 species of deciduous trees and shrubs and is favoured in horticulture for its abundant flowers and attractive foliage which exhibits bright autumn colour. It originates from temperate climates, growing best in uncompetitive environments with few other species. The flowers are 1-2cm, 5-petalled and white or pink in colour and shaped like stars. They develop into edible, pear-shaped purple to maroon fruits which ripen in the summer and provide sustenance to birds.
