Iris spp.

A large genus containing around 360 species of rhizomatous or bulbous perennial flowering plants in the Iridaceae family native to the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. They are found in diverse habitats from arid, semi-desert areas, colder montane regions, meadows and marshes. They have narrow strap-like leaves and erect stems bearing fan-shaped, symmetrical flowers. Irises are widely cultivated and many varieties and hybrids are available bred for their attractive showy flowers in diverse often intense colours.
