Passion Flower Overview

Passiflora is a large genus of around 550 climbing species in the Passifloraceae family. This genus originates from tropical areas of Central and South America and most species are evergreen. They climb using twining tendrils and usually have simple or palmate leaves and showy flowers that have a distinctive structure - often with a colourful corona of filaments. These are followed by large fruits that in some species are edible (passion fruits). They are popular in cultivation for their striking flowers and fruit, and have been extensively hybridised to create new cultivars - many of which are rewarding fast-growing climbers for a sheltered sunny positions.
