This genus of around 31 species of herbaceous perennial plants in the Plantaginaceae family is native to South and Central America and parts of the Southeastern USA. They are low-growing plants with blue-green foliage and solitary almost Nemesia-like flowers held in the leaf axils. In cultivation they are generally sold as half-hardy or tender annuals especially in colder areas.
