    Poppy Overview

Papaver is a genus comprising almost 100 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the Papaveraceae family native to temperate and cold regions of North America, Africa and Eurasia. They can be annual, biennial or perennial and have simple or finely divided leaves and open cup-shaped 4-petalled flowers that are usually short-lived and are followed by a seed capsule. Members of the genus have long been cultivated as ornamentals and there are many hybrids available, developed to have a variety of flower colours and forms. This genus includes Opium Poppies, grown for their pharmaceutical alkaloids, and the Common Field Poppy that has come to symbolise the sacrifices of the First World War.
