A genus containing 21 accepted species of deciduous trees in the Juglandaceae family native to Eurasia, Canada and the Americas. Species have pinnately-divided leaves and after flowering – with conspicuous male catkins and smaller female flowers – they produce edible nuts. They are cultivated as ornamental trees usually in larger gardens and parkland but can affect understory and nearby vegetation as they produce compounds toxic to other plants.
