Escallonia 'Pink Elle' Overview

Escallonia laevis 'Pink Elle' is a bushy evergreen shrub with a compact habit. In summer it produces many large heads of pink flowers whose centres fade to white as they mature. A second flush can also appear in autumn, but it will be less abundant. It has attractive glossy, leathery, toothed leaves. Grow these sun-loving plants in large containers or mixed borders as a specimen plant, making sure they do not get waterlogged. Provide winter protection or move them undercover if you live in colder areas. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Needing little to no pruning, these evergreen shrubs can be lightly clipped in mid to late spring to remove any winter-damaged foliage. However, deadheading them throughout the season will prolong the flowering time. Unlike other E. laevis cultivars, 'Pink Elle' was a seedling spotted growing happily in the wind-blasted nursery of Ludovic Ladan nr. Pointe de Raz in Brittany, France. Developed for its wind-resistance, it makes a useful and decorative plant to grow as a hedge or screen. It is part of the RHS “Plants for Pollinators” initiative which showcases plants that support pollinator populations by providing ample nectar and/or pollen. A great choice for encouraging beneficial wildlife into your garden! This cultivar is protected under intellectual property laws by Plant Breeders' Rights. These provide the breeders of new plants exclusive control over the plant material for a set amount of time.
