Red Guelder Rose Overview
Viburnum opulus 'Roseum' is a large deciduous shrub that produces fresh green, lobed leaves in spring that turn an attractive red before falling in autumn. In spring and early summer, this bushy ornamental plant produces large, showy, round clusters of white flowers. Hence, it is often called the Snowball Tree. Easy to look after and versatile, Viburnum opulus 'Roseum' is happy in a sunny or shady position and tolerates most types of soil - dry or moist - as long as it's well-drained and moderately fertile. It needs little pruning. A lovely ornamental addition to garden borders, the Snowball Tree can also be used for screening and hedging. This Viburnum cultivar has earned a coveted 'RHS Award of Garden Merit' and is on the RHS 'Plants for Pollinators' list highlighting plants that produce large amounts of nectar and/or pollen. A great choice for encouraging beneficial insect wildlife into your garden! Commonly known as the Red Guelder Rose, you may see it for sale labelled as Viburnum opulus 'Sterile' - and this means that it doesn't bear any fruit.
