Wych Elm Overview

Ulmus glabra is commonly known by the names Wych Elm, Scots Elm and Broadleaf Elm, amongst others. It is a deciduous tree species from the Ulmaceae family. It can grow up to 40m in height, forming a broad crown with age. The bark is grey and smooth in texture, aging to grey-brown with a rough texture. Leaves are produced alternately on dark grey, hairystems, they measure up to 17cm in length and are broadly egg-shaped, with a pointed tip and an uneven base. Red-purple flowers appear before the foliage, which bursts from squat, hairy, purple-black buds, early in spring, they are arranged in clusters and lack petals, being pollinated by the wind. Flowers lead onto winged fruits, called samaras, these contain a single, round seed. Grow in full sun to partial shade, in moist, well-draining soil. This tree is susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease.
