Epimedium is a genus also known by the names barrenwort, bishop’s hat, fairy wings and horny goat weed in different locations. It contains approximately 65 hardy, rhizomatous, deciduous and evergreen perennials. They are grown for their nice autumn colour, leaves may turn bronze in spring as well as autumn. Small, delicate and often spurred, spidery flowers are produced on branched or unbranched stems. These are coloured white, yellow, pink, red or purple and artificial hybrids have been created for garden planting, these are considered very hardy and able to stand winter temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.
