Longer necks so more flesh
- One of the original 'Butternut' squashes, rediscovered in California back in 1977. Sweeter in taste than most modern squash. Larger fruits (up to 5-10kg) with longer necks than modern butternut squash. The longer necks mean there is more flesh to cook with, plus they are easier to cut with a kitchen knife. Each fruit has a small seed cavity meaning less waste and more flesh. Excellent keepers, perfect to harvest and keep you in fresh squash throughout the winter. Perfect to roast as they go sticky and sweet, delicious! Harvest August-October. Height 40-50cm (16-20").
Sow in a propagator on a windowsill or one seed (on edge) per 7.5cm (3") pot at approximately 15-20°C (59-68°F) using a quality moist compost. Cover seeds with 2cm (¾") compost, germination 7-10 days. Grow on in a warm light position, planting out when frost risk has passed, 60cm (24") between plants and 150cm (5') between rows. Alternatively, sow direct late May placing 2 seeds per station 60cm (24") in the row and 150cm (5') between rows. Thin to one plant per station.
