Giant cress heads - A fun activity with children
See how my son and I plant up a cress head using a pair of tights...
1. Collect all the materials you will need.
You will need: Soil Cress Seeds Foot end from tights or stockings Elastic band and other things to decorate Cup Saucer
You will need to take the foot of your tights and place inside the cup, stretching the edges over the rim.
Place a small amount of seeds in the bottom of your tights.
Fill the tights almost all the way to the top of the cup using soil, being sure to leave some excess fabric for the next step.
5. Tie a Knot
Take the tights out of the cup and tie a secure knot in the end.
Turn the cress head so that the knot is at the bottom and your seeds are now at the top. You can now choose how to decorate it! Using an elastic band, tie a small amount of soil into a ball and this will act as a nose. Use googly eyes and pipe cleaners to decorate the rest, but be sure to keep the top free of decoration.
Take a saucer or small dish and fill it with water.
Now place your finished cress head in the saucer and leave in a sunny area! Once the cress starts to sprout, cut a small X in the top of the head to help it grow through.
